Despite being one of the most outstanding jazz fusion works out there, Billy Cobham's "Spectrum" still seems to fly under the radar, leaving fine art to once again go unnoticed. For first time listeners I would recommend starting at the song "Le Lis" track number 8 to get a smooth intro into what Billy Cobham has to offer. The Following track "Snoopy's Search" will leave you wanting more and the final track "Red Baron" will deliver. After hearing those three tracks the rest of the album is up for exploration. The great thing about jazz fusion is that it generally has something to offer for all musical tastes. This was Billy Cobham's first solo album and was released in 1973, which in my opinion is a great year of music. Therefore, if you ever find yourself exploring the music of an artist who made an album in 1973, I suggest you give it a try. Cobham was a member of Mahavishnu Orchestra, and what I found interesting after listening to the album without knowing anything about Cobham is that he is the drummer. From my experience in Jazz the artist of an album is typically either the guitarist, pianist, vocalist, brass, or sax, but you rarely run across the head man being the drummer.
