Curtis Mayfield is one of my favorite artists, and I was reluctant to present him this early in the site's lifespan. That being said, even though I am in the album recommendation concentration this entry serves as a Curtis tribute. The third endorsement of this site propagates its focus on his most noteworthy piece of work "Superfly", a soundtrack that seamlessly coincides with the film of the same title. When listening to this album take note of the prominent Curtis favorite "Pusherman" and the title track "Superfly", but be sure not to neglect the classic "Freddie's Dead". This album eludes to the notion that Curtis was known as 'the gentle genius' an alias that can be found evident in many of his songs such as the opening track to this album "Little Child Runnin' Wild". For those more interested in pursuing the vibes of Curtis Mayfield I strongly recommend The Great Curtis Mayfield, a multi-album collection that includes all of the essentials. At this time I would like to provide you with a list of must have Curtis Mayfield tracks for those willing to delve into his gentle genius:
-Here But I'm Gone (MUST HAVE), Ain't No Love Lost, Billy Jack (MUST HAVE), Give Me Your Love (on "Superfly"), He's a Fly Guy, Kung Fu (MUST HAVE), Love Me Love Me Now, Love to the People, Mother's Son, This Year, Trippin Out, You're So Good to Me, Do it All Night, Move on Up, and Get Down.
I believe everyone can find their place in Curtis, his timeless music will always remind me of of the liberating times I equate with my college experience.
